Commissioning Paintings and Sketches

If you have a photograph of a subject related to your family's history, and would like to have an original sketch or painting created from it, please read about this new service described below.

Some of you will have visited the Art Gallery pages on my website, featuring paintings and sketches created by my son Dave Ball. Dave is willing to consider commissions to produce original sketches or paintings, based on photographs of landscapes or architectural subjects connected with your family history. An example of this type of work is shown below.

Church
Nantcwnlle Parish Church, Cardiganshire - ink and watercolour (9" x 7")

The questions and answers below explain how the commissioning service operates.

  • Who does the artwork? - The work will be undertaken by my son Dave Ball, who graduated with an Honours Degree in Fine Art at the University of Derby. You can see examples of his work on the Art Gallery pages on this website, and on his own website at http://www.daveballartist.co.uk/.

  • What medium will be used? - Dave has worked in various media, such as pencil sketches, Indian ink, ink and watercolour, watercolour, acrylics, and oils. The most suitable medium largely depends on the nature of the original subject on which the work will be based.

  • What size will the work be? - The size of the finished work will depend partly on the medium used, partly on the nature of the original photograph, and partly on your own preferences. Size can range from a small sketch (e.g. 6" x 4"), to a larger work (e.g. 16" x 11").

  • How will you deliver the artwork? - The work will be delivered by regular "snail mail" service (air-mail for overseas orders). The work will be unframed and unmounted. Small sketches will be delivered flat in stiffened envelopes. Larger works may be rolled and delivered in a postal tube. Works such as oil paintings, which cannot be rolled, will require special packaging arrangements.

  • How much will it cost? - The cost involved will vary according to the size of the artwork and the medium used. If you send your requirements, Dave will provide you with a quotation.

  • How do I pay? - Dave will agree the charges with you before he undertakes the commission. Payment can be by cheque (check) in your local currency, or by international money order or cheque in British pounds sterling. If your payment is not in British currency, Dave will have to add a surcharge to cover the cost of currency conversion.

  • How do I get things moving? - It's easy!! Just e-mail me via my Contact Page including your requirements and some details of the photograph(s) on which you want the work to be based. I'll forward your message to Dave who will take things from there and suggest possible options, costs and timescale.

  • How long will it take? - Dave is working in London, and will therefore have to set aside time to produce the artwork. Depending on his commitments, Dave may be able to complete the work within a few weeks - or he may take several months. Dave will give you an idea of the timescale before accepting the commission.

Write to me, John Ball, via my Contact Page if you have any questions, or if you want to discuss a possible commission. Dave and I look forward very much to being able to help you.
